About

I’m Gareth Hughes, and I started Harmony in Motion as a journal exploring my experiences of Aikido, the arts, and everyday life. It’s a place for curiosity, reflection, and sharing the lessons that emerge through practice.

I’ve been practising Aikido since 2014.

From my very first class, I sensed there was something far more profound than simply learning techniques. With time, I began to realise that Aikido isn’t something we acquire; it’s a way of uncovering what is already there - your true nature.

As a professional jazz musician, I’m continually struck by the parallels between Aikido and music. Both require a surrender of the ego and to be fully present in the moment, which allows the art to emerge spontaneously.

In a world that often seems defined by conflict, division and distraction, I believe Aikido has never been more relevant. It’s principles of harmony and  compassion offer a simpler and more fulfilling way of living.

Like O-Sensei, I believe Aikido has the potential to change lives—and, perhaps, the world. In my own small way, I hope to contribute by sharing the practice with others through teaching and writing.
